Could You Be In Need Of Cataract Surgery?

Posted on

Cataracts form when the proteins inside your eyes begin to cluster together, which creates a cloudy film on the eye lens. This ailment is typically associated with the elderly, as these proteins need a significant amount of time to start clumping together. Nevertheless, this does not mean that younger people are immune to cataracts, as some lifestyle habits can accelerate their formation. Some of the risk factors that could cause the formation of cataracts include heavy smoking, taking steroids, exposing your eyes to direct sunlight and more. The following symptoms should have you visit an optometrist, as they are indicators that you may be in need of cataract surgery.

You find it hard to see at night

Poor night vision is typically associated with not taking enough vitamin A in your diet. However, it can also be an indicator of the development of cataracts in your eyes. One thing to note about cataracts is that they can make your surroundings look darker, as they impede the amount of light that penetrates your eye lens. Thus, if your surroundings are already looking dark in the daytime, it will subsequently be worse when night falls. Over time, you find it increasingly harder to take part in any activities at night such as reading by dim light, driving and more.

Sensitivity to bright lights

Another symptom of developing cataracts that you could experience before you notice physical changes in your eyes is extreme sensitivity to light. As aforementioned, developing cataracts start to limit the amount of light that passes through your eye lens. As a result, your eyes begin to be accustomed to the low light levels such that any bright lights could cause you discomfort. The sensitivity may also be accompanied with headaches due to your eyes starting to strain. It would be advisable to see an optometrist and have the problem addressed before it worsens.

Your vision is becoming progressively cloudy

A prominent sign of the onset of cataracts in your eyes is if you notice that your vision is becoming increasingly cloudy. Hazy vision usually manifests with blurry sight, making it hard for you to focus on an image clearly. Blurred vision should have you concerned if you notice that it is not going away in a couple of days, as it means the cataract is simply becoming bigger. Moreover, as the cloudiness worsens, chances are the cataract will be visible on the lens of your eye.
